Great Again? (Trump…)

Washington, Brussels, man, they’re just the same –
Corporates and bankers playing their private game;
Guys in well-cut suits and wearing fancy ties
Running the economy for themselves with their bonuses and lies.
Market traders giving US jobs to those far-off foreign folks
Ignoring the racism and protectionism it inevitably provokes;
It’s time the common man let his voice be heard –
‘Make America Great Again’ is a meaningless watchword.

I’m crying now for America, shedding tears for this great land
When government won’t listen to you, when politicians don’t understand
I’m crying now for America, shedding tears for this great land
From New York to California, a fairer society is all they demand

Just drive out along the highway, in the heartlands of the USA
See industrial desolation- don’t kid yourself it’s OK –
There’s jobs gone, towns destroyed, a way of life that’s failed,
Homes repossessed by banking sharks (who rightly should’ve been jailed!).
Hard working souls out of work, permanently laid off,
Politicians on their gravy train, feeding from the trough,
Hedge fund millionaires trading businesses for personal gain –
In the US heartland, ordinary people are suffering in pain.

I’m crying now for America, shedding tears for this great land
When government won’t listen to you, when politicians don’t understand
I’m crying now for America, shedding tears for this great land
From New York to California, a fairer society is all they demand

The divides in this society are blatantly obscene,
We need to sweep out the filth – flush the stables clean –
Curb the Wall Street money-men who trade their corporate stocks;
Change the system from within – do something unorthodox:
Invest in jobs, and tax the rich, make multinationals pay their way,
Put something back into the economy – let poorer folks have their say.
Create fairer societies for people of whatever race or creed –
That’s the way a divided nation can prosper and succeed.

I’m crying now for America, shedding tears for this great land
From New York to California, a fairer society is all they demand

Democracy is under threat from extremists left and right;
Populists give easy answers with glibly mouthed soundbite,
Exploit the anger, disillusionment – make the reasonable feel up-tight.
But it all comes down to money – decent jobs will make things alright…

I’m crying now for America, shedding tears for this great land
When government won’t listen to you, when politicians don’t understand
I’m crying now for America, shedding tears for this great land
From New York to California, a fairer society is all they demand
