Leonard Cohen

To be honest: I’ve not slept with enough women
To write poetry like Mr Leonard Cohen.

A zen master of his craft, Leonard rolls and rhymes,
From bed to bed he glides, countless, intimate, times;
Some choose to believe, then rudely exaggerate,
That, above all else, our Leonard loved to copulate,
But it was just part of a poetic disguise:
Mr Cohen merely loved to romanticize.
Leonard, Oh Leonard, tell me where have you gone
The grand master of the elusive gravelly song.

Leonard, Oh Leonard, tell me where have you gone
The grand master of the elusive, gravelly, song?
You never offended, you never dismayed,
introverted wisdom you routinely purveyed,
Haunting music to love to – and words off the wall –
Gave meaning to everything and wisdom to all.
Leonard, Oh Leonard, tell me where have you gone
The past master of the elusive gravelly song.

Religious thinker, within boundaries self-defined –
Buddhism’s elusive when of the Judaic kind –
‘Spiritual’ is the word I’d preferably use
But you’d knowingly debate the right word to choose;
The thinking man’s poet, the singer – and the song –
An enigma in words, in the songs we all sang.
Leonard, Oh Leonard, tell me where have you gone
The grand master of the elusive gravelly song.

Leonard’s sensuous words are sensitively told;
Erogenous zones are there to admire, and hold,
Take this longing, we’ll replay it all through the night
We’ll accept the invite in the dark candlelight,
So I won’t bullshit the guy who gave us the song:
Hallelujah’s emotive, religious, and strong.
Leonard, Oh Leonard, tell me where have you gone
The grand master of the elusive gravelly song.

Leonard: you are the writer of the lonely hand –
We all inhabit shadowlands, you understand.
There is no pretense: you poetically condense
The thoughts you represent, so of course you’re intense;
Leonard: please take this waltz with it’s well-meant intent
As a respectful, miss you, poetic lament.
Leonard, Oh Leonard,, tell me where have you gone
The grand master of the elusive gravelly song.
